ABOUT DEAN:

"Choose to make a difference in at least one person's life every day, live your dreams, and finish strong!"

My mentor, the late Rev. Luther Schwartzkopf, spoke those words to me in my early 20's, challenging me to do my best at whatever I chose to go after in life. I didn't know it then, but living that way has turned into the most rewarding aspect of my life!

Whether as a rock climber and mountaineer now for nearly 45 years, a fulfilling career as a builder of fine custom homes, or as an alpine search and rescue professional, I've set my mind to give my absolute best in my endeavors, and truly seek to finish strong.

Along the way, I've had opportunity to affect the lives of so many people in such a profound way, and I continue to live that dream!

Without a doubt, doing search and rescue work in the high Sierra has been some of the most demanding and rewarding times of my life. It hasn't been all fun and games.....I've recovered 66 bodies over the course of my career. But working alongside like-minded professionals as a team, we've saved hundreds of lives over the years!

After over 35 years of SAR work, I've authored The Shortest Straw - Search and Rescue in the High Sierra, an educational memoir of some of the cases I've been involved in. And now, I continue to live the dream! Since the book came out on July 5, 2017, I've been traveling the country, speaking to corporations, SAR teams, first responders, church groups, outdoor groups, etc., sharing what I've learned about life....death....the power of staying focused under duress.....and how to work strongly as a team through the most difficult of circumstances.
